Creating Comics Strips Online to Encourage Writing, Reading and Creative Story Telling

Dear colleagues,

I'd like to introduce myself to the group.  I create and run MakeBeliefsComix.com, a free site where users can create their own comic strips online and print and email them.   It provides a fun way for students -- young and old -- to improve their writing, reading and storytelling skills.  The site offers 80 fun characters to choose from, blank talk and thought balloons to fill in with text, story prompts, printables and a writer's blog to help users express…

Thanksgiving Symbolizes Native Generosity and Kindness

When the first immigrants from Europe arrived on the North American

shores, they were homeless and hungry. They survived thanks to the

generosity and kindness of Native peoples, who helped them through the

first brutal northeastern winter and shared traditional methods of

agriculture that would sustain them through future seasons. That

tradition of hospitality and help is replayed throughout Indian country

during the Thanksgiving season in various acts of kindness… Continue

Watch "Speaking in Tongues" this week online!

Meet Jason, Durrell, Julian, and Kelly. Four typical American kids, with one exception. Their parents placed them in schools where, from the first day of kindergarten, their teachers speak a foreign language. Speaking In Tongues uses this scenario to explore the provocative notion that being bilingual can be a national asset regardless of your home language.

PBS has made the video available online through September 17, 2010. DVDs… Continue

Opinion: A skill, not a weakness

In this column, Laurie Olsen and Shelly Spiegel-Coleman write, "Instead
of nurturing the promise of our English-learner children, California's
adherence to an 'English-only' teaching policy has left most of them in
a linguistic no man's land, with inadequate English skills and
undeveloped skills in their home languages."

How We Adopted the Fourth of July

Perhaps because America is a nation of immigrants, immigration has

always been a fraught political issue. How immigrants define themselves

and how the laws determine who is welcome and who is not have played

out in various ways throughout American history. Yet immigrants are

among the most eager to proclaim their love of country. The New York Times'

Room for Debate… Continue

Aden Mabruk remembers what it was like to sit, silent and mystified, in a South Carolina middle school classroom half a world away from the dusty African refugee camp that had been his home for most of his life.

Now, five years later,… Continue

Connecting ELLs to the English Language through Comparative Vocabulary

I have found that ELLs (particularly the pre-emergent) respond to new vocabulary best when given a chance to compare words in their own language to the equivalent in the English Language. For instance, I introduce the word "friend" to my Somalian and Spanish-Speaking students, by asking them to show or tell me the word for friend in their own language. I begin by showing an image of friendship , and the word "friend". I explain that this is the word for a person…

Opinion: Lessons for a Lifetime from Jaime Escalante

Anyone who has seen the film "Stand and Deliver," the story of East Los Angeles math teacher Jaime Escalante — who died last week of cancer at age 79 — will remember the character Ana Delgado. She was the Escalante student whose father made her work at his restaurant. Ana was based on a real student, Leticia Rodriguez, and Leticia's experiences show just how successful Jaime Escalante and his colleagues were. …

Weigh in on the Common Core State Standards!

It is not to late to voice your opinion on the Common Core State Standards. These Core Standards are tied to the Race to the Top funds. For states who are competing for this grant money, if they are chosen, they will adopt these standards for math and ELA. Now is your chance to look them over and participate in the public comment. In this case, "silence is not golden"! Be an advocate in supporting what is best for your ELLs since they will have to meet the same standards.

The Wearing of the Green

Use St. Patricks's Day to give your English language learners an opportunity to use idiomatic language in English in Grades 3-12. This unit gives students an occasion to extend their communicative

competence in informal settings. It provides them with experience in learning and using language "chunks" and negotiating meaning with native speakers. Students also have the chance to present their work to the mainstream peers and…
